Point North Studio (“we,” “us,” “our”) builds Discern (“the App”), a private space that helps you reflect on and make sense of the people and interactions in your life. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. Discern is designed to be private by default.
The short version
- Your reflections are private — visible only to you.
- We collect the minimum needed to run the App: your account email and the content you choose to save.
- We do not sell your data and we do not show ads.
- Some features send the text you enter to an AI provider (Anthropic) to generate a summary — that text is processed, not used to train AI models.
- You can delete your data at any time by contacting us.
1. Who Discern is for
Discern is intended for adults (18+). It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18.
2. Information we collect
a. Account information. When you’re invited and create an account, we collect your email address and a securely hashed password (handled by our authentication provider, Supabase).
b. Content you create. Discern lets you record reflections and answer guided questionnaires about your interactions — for example, a name or label you assign to a person, your answers, and your notes. This content is saved to your account so you can return to it.
c. AI summaries (only when you ask). If you choose to generate an insight or summary, the relevant text you’ve entered is sent securely to our AI provider to produce that summary, which is then returned to you.
d. Technical & diagnostic data. Basic information needed to deliver and improve the App (for example, app version and crash/diagnostic logs). We keep this to a minimum.
We do not collect your contacts, photos, precise location, or advertising identifiers.
3. How we use information
- To provide the App: sign-in, saving and displaying your reflections, and generating summaries you request.
- To keep the App secure and reliable: authentication, abuse prevention, debugging, and delivering updates.
- To communicate with you about the test program or important changes.
4. AI processing (Anthropic)
When you request an AI summary, your text is sent to Anthropic (the maker of Claude) through our secure server function. Under Anthropic’s commercial API terms, content sent through the API is not used to train their models. We never send Anthropic your email or password — only the text needed to produce the summary.
5. Where your data is stored and who processes it
We rely on a small set of trusted service providers (“subprocessors”) to run Discern:
| Provider | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, authentication, and secure hosting of your account and content |
| Cloudflare | Network routing/proxy that helps the App connect reliably |
| Anthropic | AI processing of text you submit for summaries (not used for model training) |
| Expo / EAS | App builds and over-the-air update delivery |
These providers process data on our behalf under their own security and privacy commitments. Data may be stored and processed in the United States.
6. How we protect your data
- Encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and at rest.
- Access to your content is restricted to your authenticated account using row-level security.
- Sensitive keys (including our AI provider key) are kept on the server, never in the App.
No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we use industry-standard safeguards to protect your information.
7. Sharing
We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it for advertising. We share data only with the subprocessors listed above to operate the App, or where required by law.
8. Data retention
We keep your account and content until you ask us to delete it or you delete your account. After a deletion request, we remove your content from our active systems; residual copies in backups are purged on a rolling schedule.
9. Your choices and rights
- Access / export: request a copy of your data.
- Delete: request deletion of your account and content.
- Correct: ask us to fix inaccurate account information.
To make a request, email us at the address below. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA; we honor those rights.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the App evolves. We’ll revise the “Effective date” above and, for significant changes, provide notice in the App.
